The Truth About AFNOR Standards And Organic Essential Oils

October 21, 2009 Filed Under: Herbal Therapy

Many aromatherapy companies have misrepresented themselves and the quality of their oils for many years, especially in America. The fact of the matter is that there are few regulatory bodies overseeing the production of Essential Oils. As a result many of the so-called pure essential oils sold today are worthless quality.

Many “essential” oils on the market today are actually synthetic and composed in a lab.

These essential oils are lifeless… meaning they exude such a low energy that it is impossible to compare them to the level of a natural essential oil. Other companies that manufacture oils may put actual essential oil in their product, but are doctored with many synthetic chemicals to punch up their fragrance.

In the United States, a manufacturer only has to have 10% of essential oil in the bottle to call it 100% pure essential oil. There are very few ways to truly test the oil to ensure the oil’s potency. Consumers are just not protected in this situation.

In the US, consumers basically take the manufacturer at their word that what they are selling you is a non-diluted essential oil when they say “100% pure essential oil”.

There is a mounting problem of extreme chemical contamination in the processing of many essential oils. While it’s true that scientists have recreated a few of the constituents and fragrances of some essential oils in the laboratory, they simply cannot fabricate an essential oil with all its constituents and therapeutic qualities, nor can they match the essential oil’s resonance.

Chemical constituents found in a pure, high quality essential oil form intricate patterns , and play important roles in enhancing and balancing the properties of one another. Plants, like all life, require this delicate balance in order to thrive and survive. Remember, an essential oil is basically the life essence of the plant. Isolating a single constituent does not a make the oil therapeutic.

There are no requirements to tell you how they manufactured the oil, where it originated, or even what country it came from.

ANFOR does not certify essential oils. ANFOR merely dictates the standards to which essential oils are held in laboratory analysis. AFNOR does not do that provides reference documents, used by professional and commercial buyers and sellers, that indicate the “norm” for a product. AFNOR standards for essential oils only gauge their conformance to standards set and agreed upon by the participating parties. A label showing 100% Pure does not prove its quality, nor does the absence of AFNOR indicate that an oil is not therapeutic.

These standards actually enables many companies, who wish to sell their oils to the food or fragrance industries, to compound, manipulate, refine, denature and adulterate oils to make them comply with the “norm”. To the untrained nose, these oils might seem fine, but they will not give you the sought-for therapeutic effects.

A truly therapeutic essential oil must be produced according to the following criteria:

* A thorough chemical profile that includes as many of the natural constituents as possible
* grown organically (or wildcrafted),
* distilled at minimum pressure and temperature in vessels of non-reactive materials,
* bottled unchanged, unrefined and unadulterated.

Young Living created and defined the term therapeutic-grade. There was not then, and there is not now, an organization other than Young Living Essential Oils qualified to certify an essential oil as therapeutic-grade. Why?

No one has more experience than Young Living growing, harvesting, and distilling essential oils, and certainly no one has more experience using essential oils from household cleaning to everyday health and wellness as well as vast medical applications in a clinical setting. Gary Young has led chemists and essential oil experts with the single purpose of ensuring that the Young Living standard represents the oils’ optimal natural constituent profile.

Anyone can claim their oils are pure , but until they have spent years studying the vast library of essential oil science and know how to properly calibrate and operate complete Gas Chromatograph and Mass Spectrometers specifically designed for essential oil analysis and how to interpret that analysis, they would likely not even know the difference between a natural or synthetic compound.

To further ensure quality, Young Living Essential Oils constantly checks their results against trusted third-party laboratories. The fact that Young Living has distilled, analyzed, and conducted research on such a large variety of plants from around the world places our knowledge and standard at an even higher level than either of these organizations.

These are the standards by which Young Living Essential Oils are made. It is the assurance that whatever essential oils you buy from Young Living are the best that they can be.
