Green tea, black tea and oolong tea are different types of tea that are cultivated from the same plant. The difference in the type of tea available today is the method used to process the tea leaves. Leaves can be whole, crushed, cut, torn, curled, fermented, steamed or withered. The Camellia tea plant is a rich source of polyphenols with approximately ten times more than the amount found in a serving of fruit and vegetables. Polyphenols are antioxidants which are powerful disease fighting compounds that can be found in a variety of foods. Antioxidants work to eliminate or neutralize the effect of free radicals on the body reducing the risk of age related diseases including cancer, arthritis, heart disease, cardiovascular disease and Alzheimers.

Phytochemicals and antioxidants in tea have also demonstrated the ability to reduce cholesterol levels, improve bone mineral density, reduce inflammation, prevent infection, improve memory, and slow down the aging process.

New research has shown how tea can prevent cavities and support healthy gums and teeth. Tea has flavonoids and fluoride. These chemicals prevent plaque from forming and even kill bad bacteria. In a recent study by a major university, scientists concluded that tea can control halitosis.

Another interesting benefit of drinking tea is centered on green tea. New research has shown that green tea boosts the metabolism and increases fat oxidization. It also has an ingredient that controls hunger.

The healing properties of tea were discovered and utilized thousands of years ago by ancient Asian cultures. Tea has continued to grow in popularity throughout the ages and across the globe for its excellent taste, incredible variety and added health promoting benefits.

    Yes, tea can do that! While you’re at it, learn about Pu-erh tea. It’s a true Camellia Sinensis tea that has more antioxidants than green tea. Plus it has the friendly bacteria probiotics, much like yogurt. You’ll do your body a favor by drinking Pu-erh. –Teaternity
