Is Anti Aging Cream A Waste Of Money?

February 17, 2008 by Anthony Pang · 1 Comment

Reversing the effects of age on your appearance is a very hot topic today. With the first of the Baby Boomer generation coming into the retirement age phase, there are more and more people that are interested in finding ways to look younger, forever.

There are thousands of different anti-aging creams available on the market today. Since women are especially concerned with the effects of age to their skin, most of these anti-aging creams are targeted towards the women market, but many men have turned to them as well.

So do any of these anti-aging creams work at all in the first place? And what do they do really exactly?

Most of these products promises reduced wrinkles, which normally can be noticed after a short use of the cream.

However, there aren’t any known anti-aging creams currently that will actually eliminate wrinkles or otherwise permanently reverse the aging effects to the skin.

The facial creams remove layers of dead skin from the surface, and hydrate the lower layers giving them a plumper and fuller look that helps reduced the appearance of those wrinkles.

The wrinkles are not permanently removed, and will reappear after the discontinued use of the skincare product. Therefore, you have to keep applying the cream everyday.

Since the cost of many of these ant-aging creams is not cheap, it is not cheap to maintain the reduced wrinkle effect.

You can still achieve the same effect by using the less expensive type of moisturizers.

The only anti-aging cream ingredient that currently are proven scientifically are vitamin C and E, as well as Alpha Hydroxy Acid (AHA).

Though these three ingredients have been proven to work, there are also many other ingredients that will produce similar effects as well.

The result differs user to user and it is good to try out different brands and see which is the best for you.

In addition to antiaging cream, the two most effective things you can do to slow down the appearance of wrinkles is not to smoke, and to apply sunscreen at the beginning of everyday if you plan on being outside for more than fifteen minutes.

SPF 15 or higher is highly recommended here. It looks good to be tan, but excessive UV exposure is a sure way to bring on wrinkled skin before its due time.

5 Common Techniques For Healing Acne Scars

February 16, 2008 by Cavyl Stewart · 1 Comment

Finding a successful way to get rid of your acne is only the first step. After that, many have to find a way of healing acne scars that have been left behind.

Some acne scars will diminish over time, and eventually disappear altogether. But some scarring is permanent, and won’t go away on its own. If that’s the case for you, it might take more drastic measures to deal with your problem.

Fortunately, there are many treatments available that can treat acne scars. Here are some of the most common treatments.

Soft Tissue Fillers

How do you feel about needles? Well, with this technique, and injections are made under the skin, and scars are filled with either collagen, or excess fat that’s been retrieved from another part of your body. The result is less noticeable acne scars for about 6 to 12 weeks. Then, you might choose to have the treatment again.

On average, collagen injections cost about $300 to $400 per session. The average cost of fat injections is about $1,000.

Microdermabrasion

During a microdermabrasion treatment, the surface skin cells are removed from your face, or whatever area is being treated. As a result, acne scarring is less noticeable.

You might need several treatments to get the result you want. But microdermabrasion treatments are fast, usually taking less than an hour. And there is little, if any, pain involved.

Microdermabrasion treatments cost around $200 to $300 each.

Dermabrasion

With dermabrasion, the top layer of the skin is removed with a rotating wire brush. Acne scars on the surface of the skin are removed as well. The appearance of deeper scars is also diminished.

Because it is more drastic than other treatments, dermabrasion is usually only recommended for patients with severe acne scarring.

Dermabrasion can cost between $1,000 and $1,500. And some patients will require several treatments before they achieve the results they want.

Laser Resurfacing

With laser resurfacing, the outer layer of the skin is destroyed by a laser beam. The laser also heats the layer of skin underneath. As that layer of skin heals, new skin forms. The result is fewer, and less noticeable, scars.

You can expect to pay about $2,000 to $2,500 for laser resurfacing.

Chemical Peels

If your acne scars are mild, a chemical peel might be all you need to make them less noticeable.

During a chemical peel, a product that contains acid will be applied to your skin. When it is removed, the dead upper layers of skin will also be lifted away.

A chemical peel treatment will cost about $100 to $300. Be prepared for it to take as many as 3 to 6 treatments for you to see the results you want.

When it comes to healing acne scars, you have many treatment options. What you choose will depend on the severity of scarring, how much recovery time you are willing to deal with, and how much you are ready to pay.

Is A Chemical Peel For Acne Effective?

February 15, 2008 by Cavyl Stewart · Leave a Comment

Are you tired of buying over the counter acne treatments that don’t work? Are you fed up with spending money on expensive prescription medications, and not seeing any results? If so, you might be ready to try a chemical peel for acne treatment.

Who could benefit from a chemical peel? Anyone who is suffering from mild to moderate acne. Peels can also help to make acne scars less noticeable.

About the Acne Chemical Peel

For this type of chemical peel, a solution that contains acid is painted onto your skin. After a treatment, the outer, surface layer of the skin sloughs away, and is replaced by new, healthy skin. This new skin is usually softer and smoother, and has fewer lines and wrinkles. It will also have fewer and less noticeable acne scars and blemishes.

While a peel might have great results, the effects often aren’t permanent. Acne blemishes might begin to reappear, and scarring may start to become more pronounced and visible. In those cases, you can either return to your dermatologist or cosmetic surgeon for another chemical peel treatment, or you can use an at-home peel.

Cost and Recovery Time

The kind of peel you choose will depend on your budget. You can get a light peel for as little as $200. A medium peel will cost you between $1000 and $2000. And a deep peel can cost between $2000 and $5000. But, if you can’t afford the more expensive peels, don’t worry. Even a light peel can help those suffering from acne and acne scarring.

How long it will take to recover from the procedure depends on the kind of peel you choose. If you have a light peel, you can be out and about, going about your business as normal, just a few hours later. However, for a deep peel, you would have to stay home and rest for around two weeks.

Possible Side Effects

For a light or medium peel, side effects are usually mild. They include dryness, redness, flaking and stinging. You could also experience some minor swelling.

Those who undergo a deep peel will usually experience more severe swelling. They might experience some pain, and will usually be given a pain medication to ease their discomfort.

There are many effective treatments for those who have acne or acne scarring. And you might find a chemical peel for acne to be a promising option.

4 Ways To Soothe Dry Itchy Skin

February 14, 2008 by Cavyl Stewart · Leave a Comment

Do you suffer from dry itchy skin? If so, you know what it’s like for your skin to feel too tight. You might also have dry, rough patches on your face, along with flaking, peeling or scaling in some areas.

Dry itchy skin isn’t just uncomfortable. It also makes you more prone to developing those fine lines and wrinkles most of us would like to avoid. Fortunately, there are things you can do to battle dryness and itching.

Moisturise

The best way to fight dryness is to moisturise. Not only will using a good moisturizer hydrate you skin, it will also keep moisture from escaping. You should buy a moisturiser made for those with dry skin, and use it daily. Make sure you apply it soon after you have washed your face, to lock in even more moisture.

Cold weather can also make skin dry and itchy. Before you go out into the cold, apply some extra moisturizer. It will help protect your skin from the harsh elements.

Avoid Water Whenever Possible

You might like going for long swims, but your dry skin won’t. Going for long swims will rob your skin of oils. But, if you do swim, apply a moisturizer as soon as you get out of the pool.

Also, you may have been taught that you should wash your face at least twice a day, in the morning and at night. But, if your skin is extremely dry and itchy, you might want to avoid washing your face more than once a day. That will be more than enough to get your face clean.

Use the Right Soap or Cleanser

Not only could the wrong soap or cleanser dry out your skin, it could also contain ingredients that are making your itching worse. If your skin feels tight and dry after you wash your face, you are using the wrong soap or cleanser.

Make sure you use soaps and cleansers that are mild and gentle, and made especially for dry skin. You should also use products that are hypoallergenic.

Buy a Humidifier

If it’s hot outside, or it’s cold out and you’re using central heating indoors, that could be drying out your skin.

A humidifier will add moisture to the air in your home, and help keep your skin from drying out. So place a humidifier in the room where you spend most of your time during the day, and then move it to the bedroom at night.

Keeping your dry itchy skin hydrated will help prevent fine lines and wrinkles. It will also help to make your skin more soft and youthful.

Will Social Drinking Make You Get Older Faster?

February 14, 2008 by Frensco Dalili · Leave a Comment

Partaking in the occasional glass of drink here and there in the comfort of your own home or out with friends won’t do you a great deal of harm and indeed could be good for you. However an increasing trend amongst people out drinking is ‘binge drinking’ or drinking to excess which will do significant damage to the ability of maintaining youthful looks in the future.

Whilst youngsters might not realise it their foolish behaviour now could easily come back to haunt them in the future with alcohol associated health problems as they get older. Indeed they may also be unaware that they will actually age faster than those who abstain or drink only in moderation.

Alcohol by its very nature will dehydrate the body which is ironic in a way. The more you drink alcohol the more the skin becomes dry and dehydrated which leaves the skin lacking in the essential moisture it needs to look good. Subsequently the skin dries out and loses it’s elasticity and looks lifeless.

Applying moisturizers will not compensate for the lack of hydration from within.

Often excessive drinking is also associated with partying and other factors such as smoking (and even secondhand smoke from others at the parties) this will play havoc with the skin and cause it to age even faster.

Lifestyle choices affect your appearance and a unhealthy life style is reflected in an unhealthy complexion, and that is not the way to stay looking young.

As the obesity problem continues almost out of control amongst younger women and men it should be no suprise to anyone that at least some of the excess weight can be directly linked to excess use of alcohol.

The attitude with the younger generation is party to today and forget tomorrow but the body is not designed for this abuse long term. It can surely only be a matter of time if this lifestyle is continued that our next generation of young men and women will appear to age very much faster than that of previous generations.

It is good to have fun in life and that will actually help to keep you feeling younger but there must be limits. Remember sometimes things that seems a good idea at the time can have a huge effect on you later down the track.

The saying goes “pretty much anything is ok if done in moderation”.
