Scottish Smokers Paid To Quit
June 26, 2008 by Lucy · 3 Comments
Health authorities in Scotland are now taking exceptional measures to get smokers to quit smoking.
In the poorest part of the city of Dundee smokers are offered 12.50 pounds sterling per week for twelve weeks if a special breath test shows that they have not smoked during that time.
The total amount of approximately 150 pounds sterling will be deposited on an electronic purchasing card - which cannot be used for cigarettes and alcohol, but is intended for vegetables and meat, writes BBC News.
There are 36,000 smokers in Dundee - over half of this number are living in poverty.
“Smoking in Dundee is a difficult problem to tackle but we hope that we in this way will encourage smokers to quit smoking forever,” says Sandy Watson, chairman of the Health authorities in the city.
Quitting Nicotine Addiction

Are you being bullied to stop smoking by your family and friends? Does your environment smell of stale tobacco - your cloths, your home? You’re aware that you’re slowly killing yourself, but you just don’t seem to be able to stop!
Each time you try to quit smoking, the side effects of quitting seem so bad that you end up right back buying a pack of cigarettes and lighting up, thinking to yourself I’ll just smoke this pack and quit tomorrow. When visiting friends that don’t smoke, do they ask you to go outside to light up?
Sound familiar? Does this describe you? If it does, it could be time to take yet another, yet more serious look at how you can stop smoking for good and take constructive action.
So how do you accomplish this seemingly difficult task of quitting the cigarettes, cigars, pipe tobacco - nicotine, without going mad into the process.
Nicotine gum
The nicotine gum, stop smoking aid is available virtually worldwide and works well for some, while it has it’s disadvantages for others i.e. some people just can’t chew gum for any length of time due to perhaps dental problems or other conditions. When chewed the gum delivers nicotine to the body and is delivered to the bloodstream via absorption through the mouths tissues.
The gum pieces are generally available in individual packaging and come in various flavours such as mint and orange taste. Each piece of gum contains 2 or 4 mg of nicotine, which is approximately the nicotine content of 1 or 2 cigarettes, an appropriate dosage depending on the smoking habits of the user.
Some nicotine gums work differently, but in general the idea is that the gum is first chewed until it is soft and a peppery taste is noticed, after which it is pressed between the cheek and gums, which is known as ‘parking’. When the peppery taste stops, the gum is chewed again, and then ‘parked’ in a different place in the mouth. This is continued until the gum is depleted of nicotine, which takes about thirty minutes.
Nicotine Patches
![]() |
A nicotine patch is a skin patch that is placed (glued to) on theskin, and delivers a specific dose of medication through the skin and into the bloodstream.that releases nicotine into the body through the skin. It is usually used as a method to quit smoking.
As to the efficiency of nicotine patches, there have been some doubts expressed however, they are still on the market and presumably people are buying them to help them stop with their nicotine addiction.
As well as nicotine chewing gum, patches, lozenges and nasal sprays, nicotine inhalers are also available, which ironically work much in the same way as inhalers available for bronchial and asthma patients, where the inhaler provides a fixed dosage of medication or nicotine, depending on the smokers habits.
Stop smoking with Hypnosis
Over the years, there have been many different programs designed to help the user drop the smoking habit and several hypnosis programs. Hypnotism is said to be an excellent aid in helping a user to finally break the habit of smoking. I’ve heard that the success rate is higher than most other stop smoking aids and it’s true to say that desire is critical to action. This is most likely why multi-session hypnosis has a 66% success rate in helping people quit smoking. That’s higher than any other smoking cessation method that there is.
There are new techniques in cognitive behavioural therapy and clinical hypnosis that help you truly want to quit smoking . . . with your mind, body, and soul. Using a holistic approach, it helps you to keep your goal in mind at all times. And not just your goal, but the reasons for this goal that are also important. Acupuncture
Acupuncture treatment is also considered a genuine and powerful aid in stopping nicotine and smoking addiction, although it’s not the most popular treatment among people who want to quit smoking, it does appear to be a method used by some to help them in their efforts of quitting smoking. Acupuncture is a treatment that apparently has no side effects.
Quit Smoking Pills
There’s a new quit smoking pill that might provide the advantage you need to defeat the smoking habit for good. How nice would it be to quit smoking and not crave another cigarette, constantly feel on edge or turn to another vice like food?
Determination and Will Power
While it’s understandable, it’s foolish to think you can’t quit smoking because you lack will power - this in the end will become an excuse and you’ll most likely start smoking again, so it’s important to keep saying to yourself ‘I can do it’. Smoking has been compared to alcohol and heroin addiction, but this is not about how you quit smoking, it’s more important that you succeed in breaking the habit.
Working Through The Nicotine Cravings
Some compare the symptoms of quitting smoking to the experience of losing someone close to them. You may mourn the loss of your smoking habit and feel depressed, you might feel edgy or angry and snap at those closest to you. If you start feeling this way it’s important to try and work through it by putting yourself outside the situation and remember that reaching the end goal is worth the sacrifice you feel you’re making.
Quitting smoking will make you feel better in many ways, it will definitely give you more energy, improve your skin, reduce bad breath, you’ll smell better, so will your home and you’ll alleviate the health risks involved with smoking. Quitting the smoking habit requires commitment, motivation and resources, but there’s no one right way to quit, but there are some key elements in quitting smoking successfully. Think of it as not something you’re giving up, but something you’re gaining.
So, lose the smoke and keep the glow of your life alive and shining bright.

Celebrate Your Achievement of Not Smoking
April 21, 2008 by Lucy · Leave a Comment
Smokers are being hounded and hunted these days. With ‘No’ being probably the most frequent word they’re hearing or reading, whether it’s at their workplace, their favourite restaurant, or their own home. “Don’t smoke in here!” is getting to be the smoker’s term of the day and it’s becoming more and more frequent.
But even though these smokers know that smoking, indoors or otherwise is hazardous to their health and that of others, it’s small wonder many of the millions of adult smokers around the world can’t help feeling like a scolded, bad child who’s always being punished. You might be one of them.
Perhaps the thought crossed your mind to quit smoking? Aren’t you at least thinking about quitting? Then maybe it’s time to re-program this “deprivation” into a constructive opportunity instead of a punishment.
There are enough New-Age mumbo-jumbo suggestions out there, this is not one of them. On the contrary, it’s derived from a scientific study published in the [1] American Journal of Public Health. The researchers found that workers whose employers enforced a non-smoking policy at work doubled their likelihood of successfully quitting the smoking habit.
On a more personal level, those smokers who decided not to smoke in their homes were almost 10 times more likely to be successful in stopping with smoking in homes where smoking was permitted.
So, choosing not to smoke in your own home not only decreases the amount you smoke and the hazardous effects on others around you, it will also help you quit the smoking habit.
That’s what we mean about changing your thinking. If you think of not smoking at home as an opportunity, you’ve changed two major aspects in the process toward becoming a non-smoker: you’ve changed your behaviour and you’ve changed your route of thinking - mind over matter.
Changing your thinking from the negative to the positive feels much better too doesn’t it. Instead of focusing on the more negative like “I can’t smoke here,” and all the other “I can’ts” and “not allowed’s”, instead you’ll be thinking “I am choosing to make my home and my immediate environment smoke-free.” Doesn’t that feel so much more constructive.
So, clean out those ashtrays and put them far away for good. Your non-smoking guests, your family, your pets, and not forgetting your own body will celebrate your achievement!

Quit Smoking - Wouldn’t That Be Nice

Quit smoking programs using hypnosis are very involved when done correctly. Working to change behaviors which involve many parts of your life is complicated. If you were a hypnotist, you might have to put it all together, but you are not which makes your job easy!
You’re the only one who knows what it’s like to experience and fight your cravings. Often the cravings feel like something no one else can understand. If you’ve been smoking long enough you might have forgotten what it is like to NOT have a craving! With a well formed hypnosis program, you can address your unique cravings directly as well as defuse the emotional triggers so they no longer happen.
A good and modern hypnosis technique can directly address your problem areas. A quality session works to remove cravings or emotional associations from your mind. When it is done, you experience a simple choice to smoke or not, rather than a struggle against a craving.
It doesn’t end there. Hypnosis can help make it even easier for you to begin having cravings for other things such as water, exercise and fresh air. These distractions help to fill in your new found free time. Think of all the time you use smoking each day, now think of all the things you could be doing instead!
Some people think quitting smoking is stressful! That stress could trigger a craving! Good news, hypnosis can help with stress as well. Quitting smoking should feel good, not stressful, and hypnosis will help ease this worry.
Wouldn’t it be nice to feel confident and know you will not pick up another cigarette. I am sure this is not your first attempt to quit which means you failed at previous attempts. This behavior can diminish self confidence. Hypnosis can help you build confidence by learning new positive behaviors through repetition.
What if I gain weight? No worries, hypnosis can address both your eating habits and choices. This will help you stay in control while quitting. Just knowing this should ease your mind, making the process more successful.
With all the help in your corner, this time, quitting smoking will be a walk in the park. Which doesn’t sound so bad at all!

Quit Smoking Tips That Can Change Your Life
Most smokers, when you ask them, will claim that even though they smoke everyday, they really do want to quit smoking. However, the number one reason some smokers don’t quit is because deep down inside, they really do not want to quit at all. Nicotine is an addictive drug, it’s as simple as that. And the body, once introduced to high amounts of it over a period of time, can’t seem to function without it. But it is a habit that can be broken.
Do you want to quit smoking? There is a very powerful quit smoking tip that can literally change your life – because it would ensure your 100% success. Do you want to know what this is? Read on and find out all about it.
What You Need To Quit Smoking Once For All.
I read once a quip that made me smile – ‘Who says quitting smoking is difficult? I quit five times and there is nothing to it.’
This is usually what happens. You think you’ve quit smoking for good and the habit is broken for ever. Then, you just take an occasional cigarette with your friends – just to be social – and that’s it - you’re smoking again.
In your mind, this is just a one-time-smoke and nothing to worry about. This would be like an occasional chocolate cake slice when you’re dieting. However, in no time flat, you’re ‘treating’ yourself on a regular basis, and before you realise it - you’re back smoking regularly again.
Bear in mind that getting back to smoking is extremely easy, but you also need to know what’s in store for you when you start your stop smoking campaign.
The withdrawal symptoms can be very unpleasant. Are you ready to tackle this problem head on? Do you know what medication can help you with the withdrawal symptoms? Do you know how long it takes to get rid of the habit?
You need to have nerves of steel and a high level of commitment to rid yourself of this toxic and risky habit.
The Difference Between Success And Failure – A Great Quit Smoking Tip
When you decide to quit smoking, take another decision too. Decide never to smoke a cigarette that is bought with your money, and never carry a pack with you.
These smoking tips help you stay off the cigarettes?
1. The first part of the quit smoking tip – never buy your own cigarettes means that if you smoke you would need someone to offer you one. Most people do not like to share their cigarettes on a regular basis and if you are identified as one who is out for freebies, you would very soon be a loner.
2. The second part of the quit smoking tip – never carry a pack of cigarettes with you. This means that you cannot depend on having a cigarette when you need one – behaviour change – so you would out grow the dependency on it over time.
All smokers are aware that smoking is very bad for their health. Yet, many continue to smoke even when they know that this habit actually kills. Is that not enough a reason to quit smoking? Of course, there are many, many other reasons – but this one is the most critical, i.e. your life. Smoking is such an irony – you pay money to buy yourself a slow and extremely painful (not to mention expensive) death.
Some Reasons Why You Should Stop Smoking - Today.
If you have to look for a reason to quit smoking, you will find many. Some are very well known and some are not so popular. Check out the following list and get motivated to stop this habit before it stops your life.
1. Repair your looks – did you know that smoking is ‘stealing’ oxygen from your blood? The under-oxygenated blood in turn affects most of the organs in the body – negatively. One of the organs attacked and very obvious to the naked eye, is the skin. The skin of a smoker would have an unhealthy pallor and would suffer from dryness. Very often the skin would look like parchment paper and it is easily wrinkled at a very young age. A good reason to quit smoking is hence, to look better and prevent premature wrinkling of your skin.
2. Protecting those who live around you – obviously your family and friends. A good number of reports point to the fact that passive smoking is much more harmful than smoking itself. In this case you would be guilty of poisoning your children, spouse, parents and friends. Is that not a sufficient reason to quit smoking?
3. Prevent lung cancer – more than 80 percent of smokers would suffer from some or other respiratory related diseases; a very high percentage of this number would be of cancer; lung cancer. This is a horrendous, tortuously slow and extremely painful death. You would literally suffocate over 6-36 months dying a lingering death that you would not wish for your worst enemy. Don’t you think this is an excellent reason to quit smoking?
4. You do not smell so terrible – a smoker smells of cigarettes - all the time. No matter what deodorant you use, you would still smell of cigarette smoke. It is often that your breath too, would be invaded by this smell, which is definitely not at all pleasant.

Elements Of A Smoking Habit
February 9, 2008 by Patrick Glancy · Leave a Comment
Let’s pretend you wanted form a habit. And not just some wimpy habit, but a major, mind controlling, and life changing habit behavior. Where do you start to make it a really strong habit that will feel impossible to break? There are three basic ways we learn habits; emotions, authority figures, and repetition.
Example:
Now, let’s pick a person for our example. How about you when you were 10-14 years old. And for this example, let’s use the habit of smoking.
When you were in that age range we can assume you were learning about your life and how you fit into it. You may not have felt as sure about yourself.
Kids that age sometimes feel self-conscious, dependant on others, powerless, not good enough, or??. We’ll call this feeling “bad”. This is not saying you felt miserable, but maybe didn’t feel “good” as you thought you should feel? Did you feel as “good” as you thought other people felt?
Possibly, (probably) not. Which would mean you wanted to feel better, or at least as good as you thought other people feel. What would make you feel better? That depends on the influences in your life to that point.
How does a person learn things like that? Emotions, authority figures and repetition. You probably saw authority figures smoking - parents, family, friends, role models, and of course, advertisements. Smoking is perceived as tough, strong, independent, self-assured, and unique. All the “good” feelings you were feeling a lack of.
Your mind would develop a craving for the very thing it believes is in your best interest. The thing that will make you feel better. A craving that is a “feeling”, separate from a “knowing”.
Then at some point you tried your first cigarette, and DID feel better. But you were not very good at smoking yet and since it made you feel better, you practiced it until you were good at it.
Time passes and you continue to reinforce the emotional associations with your triggers. If you feel tired, stressed or angry, you want to smoke to get that refreshing “ahhhh” feeling.
A lot of people working to quit smoking have thought of these things. A lot have not. But, all of the people that have tried to quit smoking have used a lot of time thinking and analyzing their habit. Trying to argue themselves into quitting. But, you didn’t learn this habit by thinking and analyzing. Why would trying to quit smoking that way work?
It is a lot easier to quit smoking with the same methods you started smoking with. A “hypnotized” state of mind combined with emotions, authority figures and repetition. Often called modern hypnosis.
