Eating in a healthy way is something we all would like to do, although for some it can be a challenge. In order to have healthy eating habits, you must first make the right food choices. Healthy eating habits is all about what you eat, which makes the choices very crucial to your results.

Consume 6 ounces of grains per day. To do this, eat 3 ounces of whole grain cereals, breads, rice, crackers, or pasta. You can get an ounce of grain in a single slice of bread, or 1 bowl of cereal.

Vegetables

These should be varied, eat 2 1/2 cups of them each day. Start eating more of the dark vegetables, such as broccoli and spinach. Carrots and sweet potatoes are good as well. Try eating more dry beans such as peas, pinto beans, and even kidney beans.

Fruits

Fruits are very important. Eat 2 cups of them each day. Focus on eating a variety, such as fresh, frozen, canned, or even dried fruit. Drink fruit juices as well, although use moderation when doing so.

Milk

calciumMilk is your calcium rich friend. For adults, 3 cups is the ideal goal daily and for children 2 - 8, cups is ideal. When choosing milk products or yogurt, fat-free or low-fat is ideal. Those of you who don’t like milk or can’t have it, choose lactose free products or other sources of calcium such as fortified foods and beverages.

Meat and beans

Eating 5 ounces a day is the ideal goal, as you should go lean with your protein. When eating meat, always bake it, grill it, or broil it, as this will prevent grease from adding to the equation. Vary your protein as well, with more fish, beans, peas, and nuts.

When cooking your food, limit solid fats such as butter, margarine, shortening, and lard. These foods may add flavour to your dishes, although they can also help raise your cholesterol as well. Therefore, try to add these foods and any foods that happen to contain them.

To help keep your saturated fat, trans fat and sodium low, check the nutrition facts label that can be found on the food package and will tell you all the information you need to know about the food item.

By picking your foods wisely and watching what you eat, you’ll help control your lifestyle. Regular exercise is great as well, as it goes perfectly with a healthy eating lifestyle. No matter what your age is, eating healthy foods will help you keep your lifestyle active for years to come - and help keep your health in tip-top condition into the bargain.

Healthy Foods Are Available

March 2, 2008 by Sara Mendez · Leave a Comment

Healthy lifestyle trends are popping up in many areas of this country. Many restaurants are offering healthier alternatives, fast food restaurants are disclosing nutritional information and public schools are ripping out soda machines and replacing them with water machines. Attitudes toward exercise are getting more positive, diet has been replaced by the phrase “healthy lifestyle” and the word “organic” is now understood by many. America has spoken, it is time for a change of lifestyle!

Fast food restaurants such as Wendy’s and Subway were some of the first to offer substitutions for children and adults. At Wendy’s a salad can replace fries for no extra charge. For a kid’s meal, parents can order their children a fruit cup and milk instead of fries and a soda. Subway also has raisins and apples in place of chips. Other chains such as Fatburger are now using soy ban oil instead of regular vegetable oil which will reduce calories and trans fat. They will also start using the leanest beef possible in all of their burgers and they are now offering a Boca patty (soy based meatless patty) substitute for all their burgers according to prleap.com.

In years past eating out meant not knowing how many calories or servings you were eating. There was a lot of guess work involved. But after America demanded to be informed, restaurants and chains relented. Now the nutritional information can be found anywhere from their internet websites, pamphlets in the place, or on the actual container such as McDonald’s fries carton. There is no more guess work to be done, consumers know exactly what they are eating, no more mystery meat!

Americans did not stop there, they went a step further and asked for schools to battle the bulge right a long with them. During the 2006-2007 school year, every district in America had a goal to obtain. This goal was to implement a better nutrition and increase activity levels according to aappolicy.org, and nearly every school accomplished this. Soda machines, snack machine and pizza were removed from every district from preschool to high school. They have been replaced by water, fruit and a salad bar. Kids can no longer sell junk food for clubs during school hours and all the cafeterias are required to serve balanced meals.

People are also making an effort to get out and exercise at least three days per week. According to WebMD.com, some of the most popular exercises are yoga, core work and martial art based exercises such as Tai Chi which all help to relieve stress and get you into shape. In 2008 WebMd.com reports America will likely see an increased amount of training, education and certification for all exercise providers and trainers. This is due largely to the rising health kick.

Eating right is only one way to be healthy, the public wants more! They want more exercise! People are making an effort to get out and exercise at least three days per week. According to WebMD.com, some of the most popular exercises are yoga, core work and martial art based exercises such as Tai Chi. All of these exercises have multi-fold benefits such as stress relief, flexibility training and toning all built in. A new trend in exercises is also emerging, in 2008 WebMd.com reports America will likely see an increased amount of training, education and certification for all exercise providers and trainers. This is due largely to the rising health kick.

Flexitarianism is a new “diet” which is quickly on the rise with many Americans according to CNN.com. Dietitians are defining these dieters as those who eat mainly fruits and vegetables but also eat protein but only three days per week such as chicken, lean beef and fish. The other four days a week they eat meatless meals. It is a diet which is low in saturated fat and high in fiber. Those who follow this diet have lower risk of stroke, diabetes, and heart attack.

America is ready to make a stand. Obesity causes stress for individual families, the pubic and healthcare providers. Of course there will be those out there who love eating their greasy pizzas and triple Whoppers. But for those who do not want to gain hundreds of pounds, there are now options. People are now given the choice when the once did not have one and America responded and healthy living is taking over.

Healthy Snacks That Don’t Bring Guilt

January 12, 2008 by Lucy · Leave a Comment

No matter if we are watching TV or need a quick bite while going to and from picking the kids up at school, or work - we all love snacks one way or another. We can’t get away from the fact - so why fight it? Our whole life we have been told that snacking is not good for us. It will ruin our appetite, make us fat, or we’ll break out in pimples. While some of it is true, most of it is nothing more than fiction.

Snacking performs a very important role in our lives. Some times we snack because we are bored. We eat because we are bored. That 600 pound man didn’t get that way because he was eating three square meals a day. He got that way because he was eating too much food. Our bodies tell us when we are hungry.

There is no reason to cut out snacking all together. Snacking is also a great way to avoid things that we do as a pick me up some days - a kind of motivation. Read more

Junk Food vs Healthy Eating

Healthy Living

Junk food vs healthy eating, is there really any contest between the two. Years ago, I found it difficult to keep on the straight and narrow as far as junk and fast food were concerned. At the time I was busy with work, home and all the rest of it and far too busy to be in the kitchen for hours on end preparing meals that everyone was too tired to eat anyway.

To be honest, times were different back then. Fast food had just become popular and was the in thing and I really didn’t consider that my fridge and cupboards, were virtually filled with nibbles, snacks and fast food. Read more
