Healthy Lifestyles In Oregon

February 17, 2008 by Sara Mendez · Leave a Comment

Oregon is popular for many reasons such as coffee, beautiful scenery, fresh salmon and of course Tillamook cheese! However, lately Oregon has taken center stage for promoting healthy lifestyles. Portland was ranked 2 in 2006 by Self Magazine on their “Top 10 healthiest cities for women” article. In 2004 Portland was nick named “Bike Town U.S.A.” by Bike Town Magazine and it was also ranked 3 for healthiest city for pets by showcatsonline.com in 2003. Across the board, Oregon is setting a national standard for healthy living and exercise.

In almost every city in Oregon there are weight loss programs, healthy choices at restaurants, healthy food at schools, exercise groups and gyms where Oregonians have the option to make better choices.

Organic and Trans fat free foods have taken center stage over the last five years. Portland again was at the top of the list as the city had one of the highest percentages of organic food buyers in 2007 (27%). Portland only trailed San Francisco (35%) and Seattle (37%) by a few percentage points according to Vegetarianorganicblog.com. Seeing this demand, grocery stores met with a supply of organic products, a health food section and stocking Trans fat free items. In the past many grocery stores either did not offer items such as tofu or soy and if they did, the cost was through the roof. Now with the increased interest in these products, stores have answered with sales for these items. Grocery retailers are not the only ones seeing the growing health trend, but restaurants also see the benefit to healthier choices.

National chains such as Applebee’s and Red Robin are offering alternatives for dieters and health nuts a like. Applebee’s was one of the firsts to offer Weight Watcher menu items and Red Robin offers meat substitutes for all their burgers. Often those who are trying to be healthier avoid eating out because typically there are few healthy choices besides a salad on menus. Let’s face it salad is boring when steak and potato are on the menu. But now with these new special menus, dieters can feel confident eating out instead of feeling committed to another boring salad.

If a healthy lifestyle is something you desire but don’t think you can do on your own, help is on every corner, literally. In Salem alone there are five Weight Watcher sites, a Jenny Craig and a LA Weight loss center all within a five mile radius. This is not including all the private organizations such as Salem Weight Management Center. All of these companies have one thing in common, they all want to build a better, healthier, and happier you.

While the weather might be temperamental at times, there is no denying Oregonians are health nuts and die-hards when it comes to getting out and getting fresh air. Oregon’s healthy lifestyle trend is not likely to change anytime soon. Stop trying to silence the voice in your head telling you to get out and become healthy.

How To Keep Your Triathlon Training Plans

February 2, 2008 by Valorie Cherice · 1 Comment

You need to know that no matter how good your triathlon training plans are, they will never be more than plans until you take action and make them a reality.

Anyone can come up with a good plan, but few people have the willpower to see those plans through. If you’re going to compete in a triathlon, you must have determination. If you aren’t determined, you will never achieve your training or race day goals.

When you’re planning for a triathlon, you need to get to know your strengths and weaknesses; you want to make the most of your strengths and reduce your weaknesses, both physically and mentally. By following a proper training routine, you will learn more about yourself and develop a strategy for improving yourself all the way around.

It all starts with your triathlon training plan. When you work out, you need to have achievable goals set for yourself.

When you reach small goals continuously, it is more likely that you will be able to see your plan through. When you train for a triathlon, you will not only train your body, but also how your mind deals with fatigue and the negative voices in your head that tell you to quit.

How long will you be training? That largely depends on the type of triathlon you’re competing in. A few months will probably suffice for a mini triathlon. But if an Ironman Triathlon is more what you have in mind, you’ll need at least a year or more of training.

Due to the fact that a triathlon included three different events, it is no surprise that even die-hard athletes take a long time to prepare for their races. If you have a weakness in one of the events, it is essential that you focus on that particular sport. Once your weak sport catches up with your strong ones, you can focus on improving all three.

Because you’ll be switching sports in a triathlon, you need to ensure that your triathlon training lets you practice the transitions. The hard part is getting your body adjusted to quickly switching to using other muscles.

Just as an example, if you go from swimming to running all of a sudden, your body will need time to recognize that different muscles are being put to use. You need to know well in advance what this transition is going to feel like. It’s also important to know the order of the events so you can plan correctly.

You Can Succeed If You Get Your Thinking House In Order

January 22, 2008 by Alan Allport · Leave a Comment

Do you think your life is going nowhere and you don’t know what to do about it? All those plans and dreams you had just aren’t happening for you and you’re sick of it? You probably haven’t realized that your own negative mindset is doing a great job of self-sabotage. Well, the good news is, it doesn’t have to be this way. You really can achieve your goals irrespective of how far away they appear to you now. Today is a new day and the rest of your life really does start here - believe it.

The truth is you can pick up any number of books like Napoleon Hill’s classic “Think and Grow Rich” and learn the strategies to change your life around. In fact you can start today to become what you think. Eliminate all those negative thoughts and substitute positive ones.

Make yourself the promise that, starting today, you’ll really start to believe in yourself and give yourself the chance you deserve to succeed. To give yourself the very best chance of success at whatever you want to do with yourself you must start with a plan. If you want to achieve your goals, you must know what those goals are and come up with a logical plan for achieving them. Makes sense, right? You can’t possibly arrive at your destination if you don’t know in advance what that destination is.

Once you’ve decided on your ultimate goal, your next step is to break that goal down into bite-sized chunks. This one step alone will help you immensely to achieve what you want to achieve by getting rid of the feeling of overwhelm. Concentrate on achieving each small step one at a time, and give yourself a huge metaphorical pat on the back when you achieve each one. Really work on feeling ecstatic about your achieving each small step. This will help to motivate you to attack the next step with renewed vigor.

You need to relax and dream about your goals at least twice a day. Visualize the goal with you there celebrating your success and enjoying every minute of it. Visualize this success as if it has already happened. Do not allow any negative thoughts and doubts to creep into these moments. You must keep it positive and glowing.

Make this totally positive, don’t let any negative thoughts intrude. Imagine people you know, friends and family and even complete strangers being very impressed with your achievements and congratulating you on them. Get into the habit of thinking and acting in the way that you believe a person who already has the success you crave would think and act.

Read more on this subject from any number of sources and get out of the failure Rut. Build your plan with tiny achievable steps and believe in your ability to achieve it. Never doubt yourself, congratulate yourself every step of the way and regularly visualize your final goal. Live it, breathe it, and totally believe in it.

What you’re doing now is cultivating positive habits - yes, the positive can also be a habit. And once the positive has become habitual, you’ll find it to be as effortless as the negative was. Just remember to get into the habit of living and breathing your final positive goal. If you start today with a modicum of determination, your better life will be with you sooner than you think!
