Body ‘Spring Cleaning’

April 19, 2008 by Lucy · Leave a Comment

On our weekly look at fitness and health, we came across a press release concerning a New York Doctor, who says it’s time to dust away the inner cobwebs and get down to losing that extra kilogram you’ve possibly been fighting with all winter and to really start living a healthy life. In short Dr. Morrison says

… it’s time to recharge, rejuvenate and renew your bodies for spring. The Hampton’s season is nearing and bathing suit time is almost here, so  vacation1stop hibernating and start cleansing with Dr. Morrison’s Urban Detox Diet (www.dailybenefit.com). After 30 days, users will lead a more active and healthy lifestyle and even shed a few pounds too.

Why Detox During Spring
"During the spring season our bodies go through a series of hormonal changes," said Dr. Morrison. "Cortisol (a hormone which helps the body break down food for energy) levels tend to fall making it easier to shed stubborn belly fat and remove waste. In the winter, our cortisol levels are higher making it more difficult to lose weight."

So if you’re in the New York area give Dr. Morrison’s Urban Detox diet some serious thought. Please remember to visit with your own physician if you are unsure about starting a body detoxification and/or new weight loss program.

The Many Treatments And Names Of Melasma

February 13, 2008 by Sara Musfeldt · 1 Comment

Article Two of Three in the Series on Fighting Melasma

Melasma goes by many names including chloasma, age spots, hyper-pigmentation, and mask of pregnancy. The condition is not dangerous or contagious and the types of treatment range from topical products to laser treatments to a detox. Most of these treatments don’t eliminate melasma altogether, but they will improve your skin’s fitness.

The following products and treatments are two steps to include in your melasma skin care regimen.

Obtaining skin treatments to improve your melasma

To minimize the appearance of melasma and to improve the overall look of your skin, an esthetician at a skin spa is able to provide three skin treatments. Complete cell renewal takes about six weeks so all skin treatments including chemical peels, pulse light therapy, and laser treatments should be done in a series.

Chemical peels-often composed of a glycolic, retin-A, alphahydroxy, trichloroacetic, and phenol acids-exfoliate the superficial layers of the skin encouraging new, healthy cell growth. Another benefit of aggressive exfoliation like this is that skin brightening products will be better absorbed by your skin.

To penetrate the skin, pulse light therapy uses special wavelength of light. The light’s heat encourages blood vessels to disappear.

Laser treatments are successful in treating melasma because it is able to reach the lower layers of your skin. The laser encourages new cell growth and collagen production providing firmer and brighter skin.

Using products that will make melasma disappear

There are dozens of skin brightening, skin bleaching, and skin exfoliating products that advertise amazing dark spot removal. Although these products may lighten your melasma, you should not expect it to work miracles. There are four product types you should use in your melasma skin care plan.

Topical brighteners and bleaches should contain alpha and beta hydroxyl acids. The products are absorbed into the skin reducing the amount of melanin produced, which is one way. Some products are particularly beneficial because they contains hydroquinone which has proven to correct discoloration more than many other ingredients.

Another step is a gentle exfoliating scrub is important because it removes dead skin cells on the surface leaving healthier cells. Using a scrub two to three times a week, like a chemical peel, encourages new cell growth and allows brighteners and bleaches to be absorbed more efficiently.

To neutralize the skin’s color and calm redness, choose a moisturizer that includes the elements of B3 and botanicals. Antioxidants like vitamins C and E are contained in many products which aides in fighting off free radicals in the environment.

Last but definitely not least is a sun block. Apply sun block to your face, ears, hands, and chest (if exposed) every day. This is particularly important if you are using a bleaching agent. When using a bleaching agent your skin cells have lost some or all of their pigment. The sun’s UVA and UVB rays will worsen your melasma.

In fighting melasma, skin treatments and skin care products are just two factors. In the first and third articles of the Fighting Melasma series, more melasma removal information is discussed.

The Lemonade Diet - To Do Or Not To Do?

January 8, 2008 by Jo Johannson · 2 Comments

The Lemonade Diet was devised in the 1940s. There is still a great deal of controversy about whether it is a good, healthy diet. For some people, it is something they do twice a year for their health and vitality. For other people, the Lemonade Diet is dangerous to your health and nothing would make them do it.

Let’s look at the Lemonade Diet. What, actually, is it? Originally named the Master Cleanse, it became the lemonade diet through popular usage. It was first planned as a de-toxifier for the bowel and body rather than as a reducing diet. Stanley Burroughs, the originator of the Lemonade Diet said it is ”a reducing diet which is far superior in every way, to any other system because it dissolves and eliminates all types of fatty tissue.” Read more

Easy and Gentle Detoxification

Gentler Ways to Detox the Body

Imagine having clearer skin, sparkling eyes, a sharper mind, being energy revitalized with a stronger immune system and feeling healthy inside out, these are the things that you can enjoy by undergoing a body detoxification program. Because when your mind is drained, your body aches and your energy levels are close to zero, a good way to revitalize is with a body detox.

Detoxification basically means removing the toxic substances from the body through eliminating impurities from the blood in the liver, through kidneys, intestines, lymph and skin.

Reducing Body Toxins

Firstly, the built up toxins in your body need to be reduced. Cut down or eliminate completely cigarettes, alcohol, coffee, eating foods with saturated fats and refined sugars (cola and ketchup contains large amounts) - these act as toxins in your body and are a hindrance to your healing and cleansing process. The use of household cleaners that are chemically based and personal health care products such as shampoos, toothpaste, deodorants and cleansers should be reduced as well.

These chemicals block our pores and get into our skin and through to our internal system, where we never really fully eliminate them unless going through a process of detoxification. There are many ways to detox the body. It’s up to you to choose which suits your lifestyle and preference.

Juice fasting

With this method of body detoxification, you will be drinking only fresh fruits and vegetables such as carrots, spinach, celery, cabbage, apples, pineapple and cranberry (avoid citrus fruits). This is an effective way of discharging toxins, it also provides and introduces a great many nutrients as well as enzymes to lessen the intensity of the cleansing process to an easy pace.

Fast weight loss is the main benefit from juice fasting. A person may drop 30-40 lbs on a 30-day juice fast. Duration of juice fasting is usually 1-3 days. Medical administration and careful assessment is required for longer fasting.

Water fasting

Only water is consumed during a water fast. Water lets the digestive tract and organs rest completely, allowing all of your energy to self-repair and strengthen damaged organs. It also eliminates toxin build-ups. Water fasting not only eliminates obstruction and aids in self-healing, it is also revitalizing and motivating.

Gentle ways to detox the body

The following are gentle and safe ways to detox your body that you can incorporate with different methods as part of your routine.

  1. Change Your diet.

Eat whole grains, fresh fruits and vegetables instead of packaged and fast foods that are high on fats and sugar should become part of your daily lifestyle in maintaining good health.

  2. Take a Sauna.

The sauna is widely used by many as a regular part of a body detoxification. It is a great method of removing chemicals build ups in fat cells. Saunas are usually combined with diet, exercise and nutritional supplements.

  3. Start Skin brushing.

With the combination of diet, exercise and nutritional supplements, skin brushing is also a gentle way of detoxing. It removes old skin cells, stimulates the lymph system and draws out toxins through the skin. A dry skin brush made of soft vegetable bristles should be used.

As always please consult with your doctor before starting on new diets, body detoxification or exercises.
