Pilates Benefits Achieved In 10 Easy Sessions

January 18, 2008 by Nathan Cross

Joseph Pilates, the man who created the Pilates group of exercises was a sickly child. He suffered from rickets, asthma and rheumatic fever. But his poor health became his inspiration. At age 14, he took the solution to his fitness problems into his own hands by engaging in exercise and body building.

Pilates is a fitness regime designed to balance, stretch and strengthen the body with particular emphasis on the deep torso muscles. It also uses the mind to improve movement, efficiency and muscle control, which why it is often said that Pilate exercise somehow improves one’s mental state.

Exercising With Pilates - The Benefits

Pilates yields numerous health benefits, from flexibility to muscular and mental coordination, such as:

* Lean, toned body shape.

* A healthier back which is stronger and more flexible.

* Stronger muscles but without the bulk.

* Improved posture.

* Improved circulation.

* Greater flexibility and joint mobility.

* Back pain prevention.

* Relief from stress.

Basically, the buttocks, back and abdomen are targeted to strengthen the body core so that they act as a firm support system for the spine.

Studies have revealed that the Pilates system is so gentle it can be integrated into rehabilitative exercise, as well as physical therapy programs that are designed to speed recovery of soft tissue injuries. This is why it is recommended by many orthopedists, chiropractors and physical therapists.

How you choose to practice Pilates is up to you. You can follow a program from a book, DVD or video or attend a class in you local area. The advantage of going to a class is that you will get instant feedback from the instructor who will tell you if your body alignment is incorrect. This way you will get maximum benefit in the shortest time.

Whichever approach you choose you will find that, within weeks of starting, you will have better posture, a flatter stomach, toned muscles and more flexible joints and your stress levels should have dropped considerably.
