How Quickly To Walk Before It’s Beneficial

March 24, 2009 Filed Under: Walking

Researchers have determined the pace is needed in order to make walks beneficial for health and exercise. Although you might think a quiet and peaceful walk with the dog or baby is benefiting you it isn’t – at least not your health. Researchers have worked out just what the pace should be on your walks before it can be called health promotion exercise.

If you would like to strengthen your health and mobility using walking tours, it is not enough just taking a stroll and using a pedometer. You’ll need at least to aim for a minimum of 100 steps per minute to get any beneficial health effect from walking.

It is recommended that walking tours are made up of 100 steps per minute for 30 minutes daily, five times a week. This means that we should aim to reach around 3000 steps on the half hour walk. But alternatively, you can break the light physical activity into several smaller pieces.

“Because the health benefits can be achieved by taking a stint in a minimum of 10 minutes, it might be a good basis to start with trying to reach 1,000 steps in 10 minutes before we build it up to walk 3000 steps in 30 minutes , “says research leader Dr Simon J. Marshall from San Diego State University in the latest edition of American Journal of Preventive Medicine.
