Healthy methods of achieving Rapid Weight Loss

August 29, 2009 Filed Under: Weight Loss

One growing problem in the U.S. is obesity. Statistics have been released showing that almost 2/3 of all Americans are significantly overweight and nearly half are obese. More attention is being focused on this problem and associated health problems, leading more and more people to seek different methods of achieving rapid weight loss. However, there are several unhealthy ways to achieve fast weight loss. A few methods of rapid weight loss are medically approved.

The first step to safely beginning a program of rapid weight loss is to pay a visit to one’s family doctor. He will be aware of different products and procedures that are available to those who are significantly overweight to achieve fast weight loss without causing worse health problems in the process. Changes in diet and beginning a doctor approved exercise regimen will be important decisions to be made while talking with the doctor.

Certain medical procedures may be brought up for consideration if a person is morbidly obese. Gastric Bypass surgery (stomach stapling), installing a Lap Band, liposuction, and other surgical procedures can be topics for consideration when seeking a rapid weight loss plan. Each of these procedures carries its own risks as well as benefits, so discussing the options with the doctor to determine whether the benefits outweigh the risks before having one of these procedures performed.

Certain OTC (over the counter) medications are marketed as a means to help one lose weight. Most of these medications work by suppressing one’s appetite. A great deal of care and consideration should go into any choice to use these medications because there is a significant risk of side effects. Appetite suppressant medications are not generally recommended for rapid weight loss.

Many people share the misconception that dieting to achieve fast weight loss involves starving themselves. The truth is quite the opposite. Starving oneself to lose weight often backfires, causing more harm than good. If the body senses that it is being deprived of food, it starts to produce certain hormones that break down the bodies own tissues for protein and energy while it stores the calories consumed as fat against future need.

Dieting properly to achieve rapid weight loss includes making basic changes in one’s eating habits that do not involve depriving the body of nutrients. 4 or 5 smaller meals per day as opposed to 3 large meals is one important step. Controlling the size of portions is critical when dieting to achieve rapid weight loss. It is important to eat enough to sustain the body without over filling. Eliminating many of the high fat snacks that we eat and replacing them with fresh fruits and vegetables, reducing the amount of red meat consumed, and reducing breads and starches will limit the number of calories consumed without leaving one feeling hungry.

Of course, exercise is also a critical step in rapid weight loss programs. The doctor will generally outline an exercise regimen designed to burn more calories than are consumed without stressing parts of the body that are not yet able to withstand added strain. As the weight comes off, the exercises will become more intense, leading to faster weight loss yet. I’m a writer for a health magazine and I have been doing some research on fast weight loss programs and methods. So far, I found an unconventional and yet effective way of doing a safe rapid weight loss.
