Private Nursing Homes

November 18, 2007 by Lucy Jones

There are several nursing homes in our area, but one in particular is where Isabelle - a very stately lady of just 62 has lodgings. She’s lived there for the last 4 years, where she is taken care of by a staff of skilled nurses and physicians due to her illness - Parkinsons disease. Her husband died several years ago and with no children, there was virtually no one to give her the constant care and help that she needs every day.

As I’m what’s called a ‘residents friend’, which is someone that comes on a voluntary basis to interact on a personal level with residents, so twice a week, I visit Isabelle where we take walks in the park when she’s able to walk and on good days when she’s feeling up to it and able to speak, we play chess and have discussions with the other residents joining in.

Isabelle lives in a private nursing home where she has her own small apartment, where nursing and medical staff are only a moment away should they be needed and although those run by the government have changed the way they manage their homes a great deal over the past few years, in creating a more homely environment for residents, more and more people who can afford it are choosing private nursing homes.

While nursing homes run by the government are changing for the better, due to the low wages paid in this sector, staff changes are too frequent, which means that residents are serviced by an ever changing number of nurses or medical staff, with little or no time to get to know one another and build trust. Sick elderly as well as young people need to have a consistency in their sometimes already turbulent lives and prefer to build a form of relationship with those that care for them. Communication between staff and resident is generally heightened when residents feel comfortable discussing various issues with someone they know and who knows their particular case.
