Determining The Right Acne Treatment For Your Skin Type
January 24, 2008 by Jay Anderson
You might not know that acne actually has several different causes and several different types. This is one thing that makes choosing the proper acne treatment more of a quandary. You need the right acne treatment so that your acne problem is taken care of. However, you also need the right treatment so that your skin itself improves. This should be your ultimate goal.
It may be crucial that you discuss your options with your dermatologist before you begin any type of acne treatment. You do not want to waste your money on a product that does not work, is useless, or will do nothing but worsen the situation. Knowing all you can about the disorder and how it functions can be a big step in choosing the right acne treatment.
For example, did you know that there is a bacterium known as P Acnes that is the specific cause of the disorder? Why is it important to know this? Because there are really two major agents that are used to combat acne. These two are called Salicylic acid and Benzyl Peroxide. The latter is an agent that works to actually kill that bacteria, which the Salicylic acid works to exfoliate the skin, which prevents and removes clogging within your follicles.
Of course, these two medications are only two of many options available, and each is available over the counter. You need to understand which medication you need to use for your skin type. This is why it’s especially important for you to talk your dermatologist before you begin any type of treatment.
There are many kits available on the market that claim to treat acne. In general, they provide a series of products meant to work in conjunction with each other to help treat your acne. They usually contain either salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide as their major acne ingredient, along with other products meant to do such things as sooth and tone skin after the active ingredient (benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid) has been applied.
With these, you have to be careful because they may be designed for someone who has oily skin, dry skin, or normal skin. You want to be sure that you choose the right one for your skin type. The oily skin treatments are designed to dry out your skin and treat the source of the oil, while the dry skin elements are designed to moisten the face more. If you have either condition and choose the inappropriate acne treatment, you could actually be working to make your acne even worse.
Most importantly, diet and lifestyle greatly affect your acne. The foods you eat can actually aggravate or lessen acne’s presence. How much you sleep and how much water you drink can also soothe or aggravate your acne. You need to get enough sleep (usually at least a full eight hours) so that your skin has time to heal and rebuild. Drinking at least six to eight eight-ounce glasses of water a day helps your body flush out toxins so that they don’t have to find their way out through your skin. In addition, your skin is much more hydrated and therefore much more likely to be healthy.
