Facts and Tips On The Treadmill.
June 25, 2009 Filed Under: Treadmills
When you use a treadmill for exercise, you usually use it indoors. The equipment lets the user walk or run while being in the same place. Often treadmill can make one think of a kind of mill operated by a human or an animal treading on a wheel to grind grain.
Most of the machines are run by electric motors and belt system. When the treadmill is switched on, the belt connected to the machine and motor rotates from top to rear which then allows the runner to run at an equal speed to the belt rotation. You can easily set and measure the speed of the run. (the rate at which the belt moves is the rate at which the runner moves.) The costlier, sturdier models are motor operated. A version that is more simple and light, and which costs less is available – it is more passive and only moves when you push the belt with your feet and will operate only to resist motion.
Treadmills History.
The treadmill was invented in 1875. The first machine was a “lever power” treadmill and was used for agriculture. To accommodate various sized animals they were in various sizes. The little treadmills were operated by dogs and sheep to deliver power to the fanny mills or butter churns they were connected to. The larger ones were driven by horses to run threshing machines.
The 1st Treadmill for Medical Benefits.
In 1952 the first medical machine was invented by UW cardiologist Robert Bruce, called the father of exercise cardiology, along with UW staffer Wayne Quinton. The Standard Stress Test was invented to help diagnose lung and heart problems and to see the severity of those diseases. Quinton later sold his interest to Stairmaster, who was subsequently bought by Nautilus.

Towards the end of 1960s Bill Staub noted that treadmills were pretty costly and were used mostly for medical testing. An affordable home treadmill was built by Staub who was trained medical engineer. He shipped Dr. Cooper a prototype, it so impressed him that he managed to sell the first few hundred to his own referrals. In 1968, Dr. Cooper’s business, Aerobics, Inc, started full scale manufacturing of PaceMaster. In that time, their simple treadmills have evolved to automated machines with computerized electronics.
NASA Program.
The American space program used Skylab treadmills so that the astronauts were able to stay in good physical shape during their time in gravity free environments. The first treadmill used in outer space was initially a plate coated with Teflon on which an astronaut ran while tethered to bungee cords.
