Eating Disorders - Bulimia Is As Dangerous As Anorexia
December 11, 2007 by Kerris Samson
Even though anorexia is the most widely recognized of the various different eating disorders by the medical community. Those that actually suffer from the one known as bulimia should not feel that this condition is a much less serious one. In fact when it comes to eating disorders, bulimia can be just as destructive to a person’s health as anorexia is.
Although a few bulimics may well restrict the amount of food they consume for most they will not. Instead in a large number of cases what a person suffering from bulimia prefers to do is actually remove (expel) large amounts of the food that they have consumed. Where as with anorexics they prefer to actually restrict the food that they consume.
Therefore, a bulimic person will rather than consume small amounts of food they will usually eat large amounts through binge eating. Then after consuming this food will then attempt to get rid of it either through self-induced vomiting or through taking laxatives to purge their system.
However the biggest problem that will be faced both by medical professionals and close family and friends of a sufferer of bulimia is actually spotting they have the disorder in the first place. In many cases those that suffer from this eating disorder will have little or no problem with their weight, in fact in a large of number of cases their weight will be more than what is considered normal for their body size.
The reason why bulimia is such a major risk to a person’s health is in relation to them trying to remove the food that they have consumed. For some people who constantly use self-induced vomiting in order to remove the food they have consumed will find that it is putting considerable strain on their heart.
Whilst both vomiting and also the increased use of laxatives to help purge their body of these foods can cause them to not have sufficient amounts of nutrients, minerals and vitamins that their body needs. Which in turn results in their body not actually functioning correctly and certainly both the conditions if not treated can be life threatening.
As with all forms of eating disorders as well as trying to get the sufferer to eat a much more healthy diet, underlying psychological problems will need to be treated as well. The problem is that for those people who are diagnosed with suffering from anorexia nervosa are also at a greater risk of developing bulimia as well. So through the treatment of the psychological problems associated with these disorders can often help to prevent the conditions from becoming far worse.
Although someone you may know may have suffered from bulimia at some stage of their life, just because they seem to be eating properly now does not mean that they are suffering any more. In fact this is often the complete opposite and it is only once they have faced up to the fact that they are suffering from eating disorders, bulimia included can they then ask for help to treat it.
