Cold sore home remedies usually are more effective than store-bought treatments. And they are quite a bit cheaper, if not totally free. Drug companies want you to continue spending money on their products. But now you do not need to – with your own cold sore home remedies listed here.
With the advent of the internet, many home remedies for cold sores have surfaced. These are treatments that we would not otherwise know about – from all parts of the world. Some have proven very easy. Others may not give proper results unless used in a specific way.
Listed below, you will discover some of the best of these cold sore home remedies that you can count on to consistently clear your cold sores. Also, now you will know exactly how to get the best results for your specific needs.
Maybe you are using one of them now with success. Good. But you may find much better or faster relief by trying something different or combining one of these with your current remedy.
- LYSINE – The herpes virus that causes cold sores reproduces by using arginine stored in the cells. Lysine replaces arginine and makes herpes reproduction impossible. During an outbreak, sufferers can take up to 8000 mg. daily of supplemental lysine. Between cold sores, as a preventative, 500 to 1000 mg. daily is common.
- VITAMIN C – Very important support for fighting and preventing cold sores or any viral attack on your body. Small, frequent doses totaling 2000 to 8000 milligrams per day is the best course. Vitamin C must be taken with bioflavonoids or you are wasting your money.
- ALOE VERA – A live plant is best and very easy to grow in your home. Nip off a bit of the leaf and use the sap on your sore. You can put the unused portion in a plastic bag in the refrigerator for future applications. This is an awesome first-aid plant to have around your home.
- CORNSTARCH – The cold sore virus likes an acid environment and does not do well in an alkaline climate. A paste of cornstarch will increase the pH of the sore area to an alkaline state, and repel further virus action.
- WALNUTS – make a salve by grinding up walnuts into walnut butter. This is said to heal a sore in 7 days or less. It seems to be an unusual remedy since we generally avoid eating nuts with cold sores – because of their high content of arginine.
- ALCOHOL – A great universal antiseptic for keeping the area as sterile as possible. It also helps prevent secondary bacterial infections. Use a cotton ball or swab to protect your fingers from contamination and spreading the sore. Throw-away alcohol pads are available and very handy for work or travel.
- CAMPHOR – Topically applying camphor with a cotton ball or tissue often reduces symptoms and can give immediate relief. A good source for camphor is a product called Campho-Phenique. It contains a numbing agent that helps reduce pain too.
- GARLIC OIL – Garlic is considered one of the most powerful universal healers known. It has been reputed to cure any viral, bacterial or fungal disease. Best results will be seen with both internal and external combined treatment. Gel-caps can be cut open for topical use.
Cold sore home remedies are many. These are just a few of the very best. You will find, as others have, these cold sore home remedies will work better, and for less cost, than expensive commercial remedies.
Although these treatments work for the vast majority of people, individually they may not all work the same for you. By experimenting, researching and combining various proven methods, you will be able to design your own arsenal of cold sore home remedies.

Cold sore is really annoying and appears unexpectedly when you need to be beautiful! Great info on home remedies for cold sores.
There are some good home remedies you have listed here. I’ve been reading a lot about home remedies to treat infections and other things.
I am now a total believer in cornstarch and coldsores.. i have only had a cold sore for like two days and already its starting to go away..i first applyed ice the minute i felt it comming on, that really felt nice and also helped it not spread. then i used aloe and tea tree..and came across this site to find out that cornstarch paste can help..well lets just say i love it..it not only feels amazing and helps with the burning and itchy feeling, but it makes it go away and not last as long and not get all big and ugly looking. when out in public, i cover the cold sore with vaseline to keep it from getting to dry and cracking. when i come home i cover with cornstarch paste and watch it slowly get smaller..yah..thanks so much for the info!! it has been a huge help!!!
Hi Sarah.
Great to hear about your success with the cornstarch remedy for cold sores. Thanks for letting us know and leaving a comment.
I get these maybe once every couple of years and I’ve always just used Qtips dipped in alcohol or peroxide and scrub till it quits hurting. It burns really badly but they do dry up quick. Thanks for the tips – I’ll definitely try out the corn starch method alongside my overzealous use of alcohol.
