Chromium Supplements: What you need to know

August 19, 2009 Filed Under: Vitamins

More and more, physicians and nutritional experts are turning to supplements of naturally-occurring vitamins and minerals in food rather than relying solely upon prescription medication that, for some patients, may be unaffordable and/or difficult to use because of unwanted side effects. Chromium supplements are a perfect example of this trend; they are available without a prescription and very affordable when compared to prescription medications. However, before using a chromium supplement, be sure to consult your physician; it is possible that chromium may cause serious side effects when combined with some types of prescription medication.

To help you learn some basic facts about chromium, keep in mind that this is an essential mineral that plays many vital roles in maintaining your health. For example, chromium helps enhance the action of pancreatic insulin in your body because it ensures that an appropriate amount of glucose (sugar) is made available to cells at the right time so that glucose energy is released – often called “bioavailability.” If your body is deficient in chromium, this could lead to the syndrome of glucose intolerance since the action of insulin is largely decreased. Adults who are diagnosed with type 2 diabetes often have diminished levels of the bioavailability of chromium; thus, a physician often recommends that diabetics take a chromium supplement.

It is very important that you ensure a healthy level of chromium in your body. Since the body needs different kinds of nutrients to function properly, you should make sure that you get enough of them in your diet. The problem with chromium obtained from the foods you eat is they are not absorbed easily and usually excreted. This establishes the need to take chromium picolinate to supply your body with much needed chromium. Chromium picolinate is actually a combination of picolinic acid and chromium and the easiest to absorb.

How much chromium do you need each day for optimal results and proper nutrition? Currently, the recommended daily allowance (RDA) of chromium as determined by the Department of Health has yet to be firmly established. To be safe, try a supplement that contains between 20 and 35 micrograms each day. Although we obtain some chromium from foods, it may be insufficient because chromium is poorly absorbed into the body – hence the need for supplements especially if you are diabetic, pregnant, or breast feeding. Chromium picolinate, sold in supplements, is a combination of beneficial picolinic acid and chromium, making it the easiest form of chromium for your body to absorb.

Today, chromium picolinate is readily available from many sources, all of which do not require any prescription. There are drugstores and health shops that sell these nutritional supplements. If you prefer the convenience of online shopping, you can also choose to get your chromium supplements from these online sources. Just make sure that your source is reliable so that you can enjoy the benefits of genuine chromium picolinate supplements. If not, these fake supplements can pose serious health risks.

After consulting with your physician, you can find chromium supplements locally in a reputable, well-known local health products store or from an online vendor who delivers your chromium directly to your door. Avoid products that are reduced for “quick sale” because their expiration date has passed. In stores, ask the clerk about the form of chromium you’re considering, and avoid stores where clerks appear uninformed about the store’s products. Online, use the “contact us” drop-down to ask questions about the reliability of your chromium supplement to avoid fake products that not only won’t help you, but may actually harm you! Chromium supplements must be fresh, pure, and guaranteed by the vendor to be “real.” Protect yourself and your health!
