Body ‘Spring Cleaning’

April 19, 2008 by Lucy · Leave a Comment

On our weekly look at fitness and health, we came across a press release concerning a New York Doctor, who says it’s time to dust away the inner cobwebs and get down to losing that extra kilogram you’ve possibly been fighting with all winter and to really start living a healthy life. In short Dr. Morrison says

… it’s time to recharge, rejuvenate and renew your bodies for spring. The Hampton’s season is nearing and bathing suit time is almost here, so  stop hibernating and start cleansing with Dr. Morrison’s Urban Detox Diet (www.dailybenefit.com). After 30 days, users will lead a more active and healthy lifestyle and even shed a few pounds too.

Why Detox During Spring
“During the spring season our bodies go through a series of hormonal changes,” said Dr. Morrison. “Cortisol (a hormone which helps the body break down food for energy) levels tend to fall making it easier to shed stubborn belly fat and remove waste. In the winter, our cortisol levels are higher making it more difficult to lose weight.”

So if you’re in the New York area give Dr. Morrison’s Urban Detox diet some serious thought. Please remember to visit with your own physician if you are unsure about starting a body detoxification and/or new weight loss program.

It’s time. The sun has started shining warmly here and the signs of summer have arrived along with the return of the swallows, that are busy building their nests in anticipation of young in a few weeks.

Outdoor activities and long walks in the sun are just around the corner. Heavy-duty cranes with sail boats dangling from long ropes are being placed back into the water and returning to their moorings in the harbour. The smell of new paint and people busy in their gardens is a sure sign that it’s time.

There are many simple, effective and inexpensive detox recipes, using ingredients that can be purchased at the supermarket any day of the week, that don’t take long to prepare and will rid your system of plaque, other unsavoury, health threatening bacteria.

Cleansing the liver, detoxifying and strengthening it - drinking lots of water throughout the day will be of advantage to you, flushing out any unwanted bacteria and plaque. Taking care of your liver and allowing it to make sure your internal system is well oiled, performing at optimum levels that will help keep you healthy, energized, bright eyed and bushy tailed.

Please note: As each person is unique in their bodily make-up, we highly recommend that you contact your physician before starting on a detox plan. For example - here are two detox recipes to start off your day:

a) Detox Recipe 1 - Morning Mix:

Drink this mixture first thing in the morning for a period of 10 days.

Ingredients:
• 1/2 cup of warm water
• 2 table spoons of pure lemon juice
• 1 table spoons of olive oil
• 1 table spoons of black-strap molasses
• A pinch of cayenne pepper

Mix the ingredients thoroughly and drink immediately.

b) Detox Recipe 2 - Breakfast Mix:

This is a good breakfast drink and probably one of the best liver cleansing tonic.

• 1 cucumber

How to prepare detox recipe 2:

2. Peel and dice the carrot and beetroot
3. Dice the celery and cucumber
4. Pass all vegetables through a juicer
5. Drink the juice fresh - within half an hour of pressing

c) Gazpacho Soup

Gazpacho soup simply tantalizes the pallet with its fresh taste of vegetables, although best eaten during the summer months when vegetables are most flavourful, it can be consumed during the winter too using other seasonal veggies.

Try gazpacho, you’ll most likely become a big fan of the fresh and intense flavours, it’s definitely a summer favourite. Originating from the Spanish region of Andalusia, over the years many new versions have emerged of this recipe, that’s traditionally made with ripe tomatoes, bell peppers, cucumbers, garlic, and bread moistened with water and blended with olive oil, vinegar, and ice water and served cold.

Traditionally eaten by workers in the vineyards, olive plantations, citrus groves, wheat fields, or cork farms, Gazpacho was originally a recipe made of nothing but bread, water, and olive oil, all pounded in a large wooden bowl and generally eaten by the lower class or poor people of the region.

Those on a low-carbohydrate diet for example the South Beach Diet can serve this soup with grilled chicken or fish for a delicious, satisfying and very healthy lunch or evening meal.

Ingredients:
• 3 cups seeded and diced red ripe tomatoes, red ripe
• 2 cups medium diced red bell pepper
• 2 cups medium diced red onions
• 1/2 cup medium diced celery
• 2 cups medium diced cucumber
• 1 teaspoon of minced garlic
• 1/4 cup red wine vinegar
• 2 cups organic vegetable juice
• pinch of cayenne
• 1 teaspoon cumin (optional)

Method of preparing:
1. Mix the diced tomato, peppers, red onions, celery and cucumber together in a bowl. Divide the mixture in half and separate into two bowls.
2. Add garlic to one of the bowls and empty into a blender. Add vinegar to the blender and purée this mixture until smooth.
3. Add the vegetable juice, cayenne and cumin to the blender and blend.
4. Add the purée to the other bowl of diced vegetables.
5. Refrigerate overnight. Next day before eating, garnish with lemon and cilantro.

d) Vegetable broth:

This vegetable broth is often used as part of a detox diet and is based on ingredients mainly of fresh fruit, vegetables, roots and tubers, nuts, and legumes - avoiding grains, dairy products, meat and excess salt, in order to balance the acidity and alkalinity of one’s body.

Ingredients:
• 2 cups of spinach
• 2 cups of broccoli heads
• 2 quarts of distilled water
• 3 cups of celery stalk
• 2 cups of red-skinned organic potato peels ( about 1/2 inch thick)
• 1 small zucchini

Method of preparation:
1. Chop all the vegetables into very fine pieces.
2. Place them in the 2 quarts of distilled water and bring to a boil with the lid on.
3. Lower the heat and simmer for 20 to 30 minutes.
4. Strain and drink the broth.

This broth will keep for about 3 days in the refrigerator and is suitable to be made in larger quantities and frozen for later use.

e) Lemon Detox Diet Recipe

One of the easiest detox recipes is a lemon drink that can replace some of your solid foods for a period of up to a week or so. Simply substitute a meal or two each day with the freshly made lemon beverage.

This particular drink is created by adding two tablespoons of brown rice syrup and two tablespoons of fresh lemon juice to a full glass of water. Add just a little freshly grated ginger for taste, to help your digestive system function even better.

This list of conditions and problems is just the tip of the iceberg on the nasty stuff that goes on in your system when it’s covered with plaque and filled with bacteria and can be alleviated considerably or cured when treated effectively with a simple detox processes, using this type of home made recipe:

  • yeast infection

Herbal Colon Cleansing Benefits

March 21, 2008 by Lucy · Leave a Comment

The body is like a highly functional machine, the cogs need oiling frequently, but a machine as we well know must go through a period of complete re-adjustment, cleaning, re-aligning, re-furbishing - so also should our body. In our daily activities, we forget to check our bodies. We forget to take care of our insides including bowels and as result, we sometimes become less effective than we are supposed to be.

Let me explain. Let’s say you’ve got this very important meeting that you need to be at and just about the time you sat down, you had this terrible urge to go. What do you do? Leave the delegation and go spend thirty minutes in the bathroom while keeping them waiting? Imagine what harm that can do to your business.

So you see that not cleaning out your bowels can adversely affect the results your trying to achieve. To effectively cleanse your bowels, it’s best to take something that will not affect or interfere with your daily activities. This is where using herbal supplements come in. Other forms require you to use interfering methods that you most likely would not like.

For example if you were to do a hydrotherapy, you would end up spending about ninety minutes in the clinic or at home. So why put yourself through all that stress when you can easily take these supplements once or twice a day to enhance colon cleansing? Herbal colon cleansing is a good way to go. It hasgreat advantages as you can take it while doing other things. Other benefits of using herbal colon cleansing supplements are:

1. Increased weight loss. Because you are used to carrying about the waste in your bowels, using a colon cleansing agent will get rid of the waste impacted in the bowel and thereby also getting rid of the excess weight.

2. Eliminates the toxic wastes. Our bodies are delicate machines allowing any thing to clog our “wheels” is not beneficial in any way. So, when you take herbal colon cleanse supplements, you get rid of all the harmful, toxic substances deposited in the colon.

Other benefits include increased overall sense of well being and great health, Clearer skin, increased energy and reduced bowel problems.
