Alcohol and Drug Abuse: Professional Help
January 28, 2008 by Lucy Jones
Alcohol and drug abuse are terms that have become common place in our every day life. While the term “addict” seems to conjure up pictures of people laying in the gutter or in some obscure side alley, many have not realized or acknowledged the full extent of their condition. In an effort to rid themselves of negative thoughts, many abuse afflicted individuals think that “this can’t happen to me”. Unfortunately, it can and very often does if they don’t seek help before the situation becomes totally uncontrollable and their lives end up in total ruin.
Often the most difficult task is for the abuser to admit that they have an abuse problem and that they need a drug rehab program.
If the addiction is due to drinking, some abusers are unwilling to accept the label of “drunk or alcoholic”, and many have even convinced themselves that they can quit any time they want to, but they just haven’t had a suitable occasion to do that yet. This can very often become a potentially dangerous situation and the best course of action is an alcohol rehab center, where they can receive the proper professional care and attention to overcome their addiction.
Withdrawal symptoms are real and when the body has become accustomed to a particular substance whether it be alcohol drugs and it’s taken away gradually or all at once, the body will react and this is sometimes very severe. Withdrawal symptoms are very real and can be very painful for the person going through them.
If someone you love is addicted to drugs or alcohol, the best thing you can do is to help them get into an drug treatment center or alcohol rehab program. These programs are very good and run by professionals who can help. Often the cost is minimal or in some cases there’s no charge at all. Talk with a counsellor as it’s certainly a preferable option as opposed to watching them destroy their lives.
