Scottish Smokers Paid To Quit
June 26, 2008 by Lucy · 4 Comments
Health authorities in Scotland are now taking exceptional measures to get smokers to quit smoking.
In the poorest part of the city of Dundee smokers are offered 12.50 pounds sterling per week for twelve weeks if a special breath test shows that they have not smoked during that time.
The total amount of approximately 150 pounds sterling will be deposited on an electronic purchasing card - which cannot be used for cigarettes and alcohol, but is intended for vegetables and meat, writes BBC News.
There are 36,000 smokers in Dundee - over half of this number are living in poverty.
“Smoking in Dundee is a difficult problem to tackle but we hope that we in this way will encourage smokers to quit smoking forever,” says Sandy Watson, chairman of the Health authorities in the city.
