Lose Weight and Energize while Walking
October 25, 2007 by Lucy · Leave a Comment
A few years ago I joined a walking club. As we don’t have a dog, I found it difficult to just take a walk without having a goal and walking alone without anyone to share the experience, or to chat with on the way, didn’t appeal to me. I soon found that walking was not only getting me out and about, I was also meeting other people, and I soon found out that walking at a moderate pace for about an hour or so, I was also burning stored fat and building muscle, speeding up my metabolism and losing weight. Workout at the Top of Mont Blanc
A workout at the top of Mont Blanc or anywhere else is easily done when using resistance bands. However, when I first started using this method of exercising, my thoughts were that resistance training
is confusing because there are two different meanings to this type of body exercise. Until it was explained, that the overall meaning refers to any training that uses resistance to force muscular contraction, better known as strength training
. Then there’s elastic or hydraulic resistance, which refers to a specific type of strength training
that uses elastic or hydraulic tension to provide this resistance.
Resistance training can be performed using various types of exercise equipment for example - resistance bands, exercise machines or swimming
machines.
As I’ve been using the elastic resistance band method of training lately with good results, a brief summary on my findings might be useful for those that are new or want to start with this type of exercise.
The elastic resistance band is a portable alternative to weights for strength training and is much cheaper. A variety of exercises using the resistance band have been developed to target specific muscle groups. Most resistance bands are available in five colour-coded resistance levels: extra-light, light, medium, heavy, and extra-heavy.
Lighter bands are used by children and seniors, or to exercise small muscles such as the deltoids. Heavier bands should be used by experienced athletes, or to exercise large muscles such as the quadriceps.
I’ve looked at several brands of resistance bands or tubes as they are also called, but Bodylastics seem to have that extra something and have developed an extremely good alternative to one or two other popular brands on the market. The elastic tubes that create the resistance with this system,
generates tension when they’re stretched. There are no cables or fly wheels - you just pull or push straight from the source of resistance. Some of the exercises require you to connect the elastic to a door and others are created by simply standing on the elastics.
Most resistance band brands today do have the door attachment, but the Bodylastics system seems to me to be a combination of components that’s unequalled by any similar brands - these components almost turn the resistance band into a multidimensional exercise machine that’s quite unique and the two main component aspects of the door attachment and clip system bring this resistance band to a far superior level compared to others - it’s a portable home gym, there are no two ways about it.
Bodylastics has also set up their own Strength band university, which is an online learning center that features more than 140 strength band exercises with video and audio instruction.
